Watch John Sergeant, Will Smith, Jaden Smith, SKE and the ‘Karate Kids’ family on BBC TV ‘The One Show.’
Filmed at one of our Waltham Abbey Dojos we all enjoyed our time with John Sergeant and the film crew.
The children were so very excited and enthusiastic, and at the end of the filming John kindly presented our pair of twins Thomas and Benjamin, with surprise birthday presents as it was their birthday on the day of the filming.

SKE Karate on ITV – ‘The Martin Lewis Money Show’

Freezing cold rehearsals in Covent Garden for ITV. Snow was threatening, but there we were, rehearsing for our debut on the popular financial advice programne.

As well as filming with Martin we worked with Saira Khan who was a finalist on ‘The Apprentice’. Although having no experience of Karate or the Martial Arts, Saira was a natural – she certainly enjoyed using the Samurai sword. Martin was great, using his credit card for self defence!

SKE Instructors and members Gary James, Darren Taylor, Tony Parlour, Lee Atkinson, Kristina Baraskeva and Jade Parlour all took part in the filming of the ’Martin Lewis Money Show’ which will be shown on ITV later this year. Special thanks to Lucy Butler for taking photos and YouTube videos in the freezing cold weather.

We had a day of great fun but it was a long day with little rest. By the time we got to the evening where we were filming at ‘Danceworks’ in Oxford St, the kicks were drooping somewhat and the stances weren’t quite so low.

There were teams from Harlow, Tring, Walthamstow, Chingford, Enfield, Edmonton and Wanstead. Special Congratulation to the Wanstead Ladies and Mens teams. Both teams won Gold in the team Kumite events.

The Tim Ahmet Kumite Course

Judging by your comments below, you want more! Here it is; Saturday 15th September at the Wanstead Club.

Tim was an extremely successful Chingford Karate Club Competitor on the local and the National circuit, eventually becoming the Great Britain National Under 21 Kumite Champion.

Ten years later after getting married and having a lovely baby daughter, Tim regularly teaches in the SKE Karate Clubs and Referees at SKE Competitions.

Tim also recently gave a fantastic Kumite course at our Wanstead Dojo. Watch out for more!

The new Mike Leigh film – A Running Jump

Members of Shotokan Karate England were excited and proud to be part of the new Mike Leigh film – A Running Jump.
The film, now on release, shows various sporting activities including Karate and is featured as part of the London 2012 festival.

BBC Television – The One Show

Shotokan Karate England were pleased to be involved with The Karate Kid film promotion and were filmed for The One Show with TV personality John Sergeant.
John was a great sport and joined in with the Karate Class learning blocks and punches as well as catching a fly with his bare hands! Will Smith and his family watched the hilarious proceedings. The picture shows John Sergeant with the Karate members and the film crew on set.

The ‘Whiskas’ Ad.

Shotokan Karate England were called on to assist with the latest ‘Whiskas’ Cat food Ad. The Ad featuring well known actor Dan Hoffman-Gill, shows Dan learning to live like a cat – jumping, falling and incorporating Karate Kicks and punches into his routine. The day spent filming was great fun and the advert ‘Man lives like a Cat’ can be seen here on YouTube.

Sensei Sato the Chief Instructor of Monaco presented Rod with a wonderful piece of Japanese calligraphy at the end of a recent European course. The calligraphy was to honour the effort and work that Rod has put into karate over the years. The calligraphy created by Sensei Sato’s wife, describes karate, which like hot water, always needs heat to keep it on the boil. Look up the precepts of Karate by Master Gichin Funakoshi for a fuller understanding of the deeper meaning behind these words.

Ticky Donovan Course

The legendary Ticky Donovan OBE and England National Coach is one of the latest top instructors to visit and instruct on an SKE course. The large dojo was packed with SKE students some of whom travelled many miles to take part.The course focussed on kumite with Ticky demonstrating some of the techniques that have kept him at the top of karate for decades.
